2024 LATIN AMERICAN PRIZE
FOR SHORT FILMS ABOUT WATER AND SCIENCE

Registrations Open!

Water is the essence of life, requiring our care and attention. Often, when science and local communities come together, we find new ways to solve water-related problems.

The Latin American Prize for Short Films About Water and Science is proud to announce its inaugural open call for 3-minute short films on water storytelling and water science. The film prize celebrates films that raise awareness and inspire action on water issues, and/or promote a wider understanding of water as a resource across Latin America and the Caribbean.

The Prize aims to foster partnerships between filmmakers and water experts, leaders and scientists, and encourages the co-creation of short films that shed light on water-related challenges and solutions. These films are intended to be a valuable educational resource to enhance awareness of water science, geography, conservation efforts, and the unique challenges faced by Latin America and the Caribbean.
Cartagena, Colombia, a city surrounded by water
From rivers to basins, mountains to aquifers, water is interconnected, just like us. The waters we share cross borders and boundaries. But how well do we care for this vital resource? It’s a question that demands an understanding of the shared water connections of Latin America and the Caribbean.

Communicating stories is one way of sharing ideas, solving problems, and finding solutions together. We are looking for local stories that can be applied to a regional or global context; stories that inspire action toward the water crisis or promote understanding of how we use water. Be creative! Whether you are a student, filmmaker, artist, activist, hydrologist, ecologist, geographer, or social scientist: grab a camera or your phone, and share your water story.

About Us

The 2024 Latin American Prize for Short Films About Water and Science is hosted by Mayors Make Movies and Let’s Talk About Water. These initiatives aim to use film to promote understanding and raise awareness in water and science communication.

Over the past 15 years, Let's Talk About Water (LTAW) has effectively used film to connect hydrologists, policymakers, students, and communities, addressing critical water issues. LTAW’s impact extends beyond film, serving as a program which hosts scientist panels, communication grants, and generally engages conversations about far-reaching water issues. Our global efforts include partnerships with the Consortium of Universities for the Advancement of Hydrologic Science, Inc. (CUAHSI) and the National Science Foundation (NSF), UNESCO-IHE – Institute for Water Education and TU Delft in The Netherlands, the Global Institute for Water Security (GIWS) at the University of Saskatchewan in Canada, the Water and Sanitation Agency of Brazil (ANA), Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in Paris and UCLG Africa in Morocco, and UNESCO – Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme (IHP) in Montevideo.
